Tasting Notes 1
The 2015 Grande Reserva Falcoaria is a blend of Castelão and Alicante Bouschet from centenarian vines (perhaps, says the winery, the oldest vineyard in Tejo), plus Syrah from 18-year-old vines—all aged for 18 months in 85% new French oak. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol.
Tasting Notes 2
A bit too oaky and tinged with a bit of licorice, this is still where the winery tosses aside the value-wine image and aims for something different—in PR and in wine. Beautifully constructed, this has subtle concentration but plenty of it, showing excellent fruit with vivid flavors.
Tasting Notes 3
The Alicante and Syrah add darker flavors and beef while the Castelão adds bold red fruits.
Tasting Notes 4
It is well structured too, with ripe tannins to support the good fruit. I loved the spicy edge on the persistent finish as it evolved. I want to see it improve to justify the score, but I am betting it can.
