Description
The gods were smiling the day that Haselgrove came to life. The site was chosen for a number of reasons, including aspect and soil composition, but lets face it, we are in the heart of Australian wine country and a perfect place to create world class, iconic and award winning wines. Although established in 1981, it wasn’t until 1999 that the winery as it stands today was built. Change again was afoot, when in 2008 over a game of cards and couple of hearty reds four Italian-Australian industry veterans decided to purchase Haselgrove. Don Totino, Don Luca, Steve Maglieri and Tony Carrocci went to work injecting a heap of passion and ultimately revamping the brand, it’s presentation and its entire range of wines. Over the past 2 years, Haselgrove has been awarded the Dark Horse Winery of the Year 2015 and achieved a 5 star rating by James Halliday. In addition, we have accumulated numerous trophy’s and gold medals on the national and international wine show circuit, including over 10 wines with a 90+ Halliday rating and 6 wines with a 90+ Parker rating. We are also very proud to be associated with Qantas and Korean Airlines where our wines are served to First and Business Class passengers.
Haselgrove Switch GSM 2014
Haselgrove Tasting Note
The Switch story revolves around the Hazel Tree. Twigs from the Hazel tree have been long thought to provide protection from evil as well as being used for water divination. A switch is a bundle of twigs signifying the collaboration of these three varietals into one.
Cellarmasters Tasting Note
“An utterly compelling example of the synergy that can be achieved in McLaren Vale with this blend, in general unequalled by other regions (there are always exceptions). The colour is great, the ultra-evocative bouquet with a tantalising mix of red and black fruits, smoky charcuterie and dark chocolate, the palate welding all this in a cool, savoury whole.” 95 points, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.
Wine Selectors Tasting Note
The name for this blend comes from the Celtic belief that twigs from the Hazel tree provide protection from evil and can be used for water divination. A ‘switch’ is a bundle of twigs, or in the case of this wine, a bundle of red varieties. Fruit for this Trophy winner by Greg Clack was selected from two parcels of Grenache, one parcel of Shiraz and one of Mourvedre, all from different micro climates in McLaren Vale. All of the parcels were handled separately, crushed to open fermenters for a seven day ferment on skins, then pressed directly to French oak for a 10 month maturation. It has complex aromas of red berry, plum and cedary oak. The ripe palate has supple notes of red berry fruit with generous, savoury length. Shows good balance of oak, tannin and acidity.
Awards
The string of awards it has been awarded include TOP GOLD Cairns Wine Show, TOP GOLD Cowra Wine Show, DOUBLE GOLD at the China Wine Awards and finishing off the year it has been awarded a GOLD Medal and the TROPHY for best Red Blend at the Royal Hobart Wine Show. The wine was developed by Haselgrove winemakers, Greg Clack and Matthew Copping in fitting with the success of the GSM blends from the McLaren Vale. On top of this the Haselgrove ‘SWITCH” GSM was selected by QANTAS to be served on First Class and Business Class flights. Limited quantitiies are only available at Cellar Door (and the online store) or if you are lucky you may find a bottle or 2 in retailers around the country.
