Description
In 1975 John Williams decided to pour his life savings into planting a 12 acre vineyard on a desolate swatch of dirt and sagebrush that would later be called the Red Mountain AVA. He had to bring in power, lay down a gravel road, and dig a well. That original block has blossomed into over 260 estate-planted acres on the AVA, one of the most revered in the hemisphere for producing powerful, opulent wines of distinction. Today Kiona Vineyards and Winery operates as a three-generation family winery purposed with planting, growing, and producing wines of immense character and sense of place from the Red Mountain AVA.

Wine Merchant Tasting Note
This 2013 Washington State Cabernet is a tasty blend of 86.5% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.4% Petit Verdot , 7.1% Merlot, .9% Cabernet Franc and 4.1% Malbec. Even though the majority of the fruit comes from Kiona’s 30 year old vineyards on Red Mountain there is also some fruit coming from the greater Columbia Valley appellation so the wine gets the Washington State designation — which is also what gives it its amazing price point. When we realized we could put it in our $20/under section we knew it would become a no brainer customer favorite and it’s nice to see we were right! It’s all about juicy black plum with a little clove spice, a little earth and a little smoke, all adding up to a lot of Cabernet flavor. The wine is medium to full bodied with fairly grippy tannins, signaling a long life ahead with, as Kiona says, “signifcant aging potential.”
