Description
Randy and Kate Pace have been making wine since 1981. The first year we made wine in our garage from Zinfandel grapes grown along the Trinity River near Willow Creek in Northern California. We’ve had a lot of fun over the years making small quantities of wine in Humboldt County, Napa Valley, and Santa Ynez Valley. Professionally, Randy worked at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa Valley as Chief Operations Officer for 20 years, and later became a founding member of Terravant Wine Company in Buellton, CA. We planted our vineyard in 2001, and our first commercial vintage was a single barrel of Syrah in 2006. It is organically farmed and all aspects of farming are done by hand with meticulous care for each individual vine. Every year we have combined fruit with other small, like-minded grape growers in the area. Our children have been involved with the winemaking for many years, but beginning with the 2010 vintage our son Ryan, who has since graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wine and Viticulture, has taken on many of the decisions acting as Assistant Winemaker. Ryan has gained experience at numerous wineries since 2008, including Santa Ynez Valley, Napa Valley, Edna Valley vintages, along with international vintages in New Zealand, France, Australia, and South Africa.
Pace Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 2013
Wine Enthusiast Tasting Note
Tarry, savory notes of dried beef, soy, charred lamb and underlying blackberry combine for a nose that screams umami. The palate carries a similar effect of grilled, lavender-covered lamb shank, black peppercorns and black sesame. Score – 92. (MATT KETTMANN, Wine Enthusiast, Mar. 2016)
Pace Wine Tasting Note
The 2013 Santa Ynez Valley Syrah has aromas of blackberries, plums, leather, spice, bacon, and vanilla. Juicy and savory on the palate, this wine has a solid tannin foundation with juicy dark black cherries, black pepper, vanilla, and cocoa. Eighty-five percent of the grapes came from the Brave and Maiden Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley and the balance from our estate vineyard. 150 cases.
