Turners Crossing Wine

At Turners Crossing we believe in the process of making great wine from great produce. Using traditional methods, wine maker Sergio Carlei crafts the Turners Crossing wines from grapes grown by vignieron Paul Jenkins. The result is a well balanced, full-bodied range of award winning, consistently beautiful wines. Just like his forebears years before, vigneron Paul Jenkins went looking for his own piece of gold and discovered a patch of dirt at Turners Crossing, on the banks of the Loddon River in Victoria’s Bendigo region. After serious exploration, it was decided that this land had great potential. The first vines were planted in 1999. Turners Crossing honours the publican Thomas Turner, who purchased land at this site in 1868, and it bears the well-trodden footprints of farmers who used this passage to cross the river, from the mid-to late 1800s. It was here that men and women flocked to find their fortune in the mid-19th century. “Get Rich Quick” was their mantra, and with determination they dug for gold until they hit pay dirt.

Turners Crossing Shiraz Viognier 2012

Turners Crossing Wine Tasting Note
The colour of this wine is a deep, deep red, matched in intensity by its aroma of concentrated ripe black fruits, complex spice and savoury elements. The gentle hints of spicy apricot are thanks to the Viognier component. The year 2012 was very warm, which created a very intense palate, complementary to the aromas. Have a sip and be blown away by this wine’s round, full flavour profile, which shows intense fruit characters and earthy elements. The enduring tannins frame the structure of the wine nicely and there’s a lingering mineral acidity that balances the wine right to the final note. This drop expresses the classic terroir for which Bendigo is so well loved, and shines as a result of the excellent vintage conditions. If you like your wines big and brash, then drink this now. Give it a few years in the bottle and you’ll see it soften and round out nicely.

Cracka Wines Tasting Note
We felt we ‘d struck gold the first time we tried this wine from Turners Crossing, ironic considering this was the region that enjoyed a major gold rush in the 1800s. This is boutique stuff made by the skilled and lauded Sergio Carlei who brings not just his know how, but the very best fruit grown in a sustainable manner at Turners Crossing. Black fruits and spice combine to offer a savoury aspect as well as a sweet aromatic lift from the Viognier. It’s an intense and earthy palate, with spicy fruit, excellent tannin structure and nicely balanced acidity.

Wine Review Tasting Note
This Shiraz spends between 30-60 days on skins, which is quite rare for Australian Shiraz (where short warm ferments and early pressing off skins are the norm). You can see that long maceration methinks, with some very shapely tannins to finish things off. The first whiff, however, is all about eucalypt – no doubting that this is Australian Shiraz. Dandelions, white pepper and meat in there too. The style is dense, compact, slightly foxy, and superbly structured, with dry, long grippy tannins and some alcohol warmth to finish. Impressive, slow burn cool clime Shiraz.

Wine Companion Tasting Note
The bouquet and palate are extremely complex, with a wonderful array of spicy, savoury, peppery overtones to the blackberry and plum fruit…..it is also very elegant and carefully detailed. This will always be a great wine with food. Top value, too. Rating 96, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2016 Edition
