Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1

Yarra Yering Tasting Note
Classic claret-style. This is the blend on which Yarra Yering’s reputation was built. Always medium-bodied and low in alcohol suggesting delicacy, but nonetheless is a sleeping powerhouse of precision, intensity & concentration that demands a requisite amount of time in bottle to unfurl & allow the drinker in. Principally cabernet sauvignon with merlot, malbec and a little petit verdot added, it swallows every ounce of its 100% new oak and sniggers “Is that all you’ve got?”

Dan Murphys Tasting Note
One of Victoria’s true heritage wines, Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is primarily a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec and a touch of Petit Verdot. Planted on a historic Yarra Valley site by the late Dr Bailey Carrodus, this wine is full of complex aromas of plum and berry which is followed by rich fruits with an oak and cedar slant. A wine drinking well now and value for the true wine lover.

Huon Hooke Tasting Note
Deepish red colour with a slight tinge of purple. The bouquet is complex and stylish, with smoky charcuterie fruit-oak interactions. It’s intense and refined in the mouth, elegantly weighted and beautifully proportioned, with a long and lingering, perfectly balanced palate. The tannins are silky soft. A gorgeous wine. Points- 95, Huon Hooke

Wine House Tasting Note
“The 70 acre Yarra Yering vineyard lies on a north facing midriff of hillside on deep, broken up and well draining gravelly soils. Bailey Carrodus seeks to make a wine of “complexity, palate evenness and after taste”. Vinification in small open fermenters is followed by maturation in ‘closely textured’ new Seguin Moreau French oak for around 22 months. Carrodus likens seasoning of wine in oak like salt in porridge, “If it is pronounced it makes it taste terrible”. Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1 – a Cabernet dominant Bordeaux blend – has bright blackcurrant fruit characters, savoury complexity and fine grained tannins. The wines age for between 10 and 15 years, easily developing extraordinary exotic, gamey nuances over time. “Andrew Caillard MW
